10/25 Ups & Downs

A lawmaker’s offices get searched, a mayor tweets absentee, and Montco Republicans are – gasp – getting along. Here are this week’s Ups & Downs.

Down ArrowLeanna Washington. The state Senator got an unwelcome visit to her Philadelphia district offices last weekend. The Pa. Attorney General’s office searched the premises for evidence of illegal campaign activity. Washington’s attorney later blamed the investigation on a disgruntled former employee. The final outcome is TBD.

Up ArrowTom Corbett. Who would have guessed that Corbett’s most successful legislative push in 2013 would be expanding health care services? The Governor’s “Healthy PA” plan continued to come into place this week when the legislature passed and he signed a bill to allow doctors to apologize to patients for mistakes without conceding legal liability. It follows his smooth expansion of CHIP, a program that is enormously popular and also provides the Guv some political ammunition.

Down ArrowRavenstahl twitter haters. The outgoing Mayor of Pittsburgh is taking lumps this week over the fact that he tweeted 2 pictures of himself in the office from other locations shortly after he’d left his office. Amazingly, some people responded not with mild disinterest but actually managed to achieve outrage. But it’s BS. It’s normal and common for politicians (or anyone) to tweet photos from events after they’re over.

Up ArrowMontco GOP. For years, this dysfunctional county party has been the butt of jokes and the personification of the Republican party’s decline in the Philadelphia suburbs. But demographics and Democrats were only part of the problem. A huge issue was intraparty feuding and factionalism. It appears that may have come to an end. Gov. Tom Corbett and state Rep. Mike Vereb brokered an agreement Thursday between faction leaders Bob Asher and Vahan Gureghian.

Down ArrowDoc Kronenberg. The Mayor of beautiful Carlisle, Pa. apparently didn’t fare as well as he expected in a debate this week. He faced off against Democratic Borough Councilman Tim Scott and independent Roger Spitz. Afterwards, he accused Scott of using an earpiece to receive answers from someone in the crowd. Huh? Kronenberg, 71, was the only person who saw it. The mayor’s salary is $9,000.

Tweet of the week: PAGOP. The party called out its counterparts at the Pa. Dems, who had taken up the mantle of Obamacare… until this week. (Cached photo).

  1. Tom – If there was a but more, than what is the bit? Nothing I’ve read has had any substance

  2. My researchers told me tonight that the Governor Tom Corbett Administration is the most corrupt Pennsylvania Adminstration since Governor Milton Shapp. http://youtu.be/ZJdIEG3scPE But there was a difference Governor Shapp CARED! Tea Party Tom Corbett does not care about the average tax payer. They asked how can anyone do business with the current Corbett Administration: 1. Be a donation bundler or a mega donor to the RGA? 2. Retain Acting Governor John Brabender and his Harrisburg COS Baby Nutt for political strategic advice or to run an ad campaign? 3. Borrow UPMC Jeff Romoff’s lobbyist at controversial former federal prosecutor, Mary Beth Buchanan’s husband’s firm, Buchanan Ingersoll? 4. Buy insurance directly from PAGOP Chair Rob Gleason, PA’s #1 Race Hustler? My researchers keep asking why was Daddy Nutt appointed to be Chair of the Turnpike Commission? What do Governor Corbett/Brabender want to keep concealed? What does Baby Nutt that is so dangerous that Tom Corbett had to waste such a big prominent appointment on Big Daddy Nutt? http://www.pennlive.com/editorials/index.ssf/2011/03/corbetts_turnpike_app
ointment.html Isn’t Tom Corbett the new Milton Shapp, who has an out-of-control Administration, but doesn’t care for anyone but Corporate Welfare Queens like Vahan Gureghian and donation bundlers?

  3. There’s a bit more to the Ravenstahl tweets than the fact that they weren’t “live”

  4. Isn’t this photo the most cynical thing you’ve ever seen? Give until it hurts Vahan Gureghian! DO IT FOR THE KIDS? Why does Tom Corbett love his Corporate Cyber Charter welfare Queens, more than he loves the average taxpayer? Vahan: “Launder” your donations through RGA!! COS Gromis-Baker will show you how. Does Brabender-Cox have a contract with the corporate welfare queen, Vahan Gureghian? Montco GOP focusing on healing party rift

  5. What, no mention of the Klown Prince Of King Of Prussia’s laughable “Do Something” video. Further investigation shows that while Daylin talks a good game, the only legislation that he prime sponsored that is now law is the anti-shackling ban which…really doesn’t ban shackling. 6. It’s disappointing to see Carlisle Mayor Doc Kronenberg resorting to desperate conspiracy theories to try and win his race. There were 120 people in the debate audience, and each of them knows that Tim Scott was not wearing an earpiece. Mayor Kronenberg is just mad that Councilman Scott won the debate.
