The federal government is still shut down and Congress earns abysmal approval ratings, but a few politicians managed to get Ups this week. See who all made this week’s list.
Allyson Schwartz. The Congresswoman has an unlikely ally in her bid for the gubernatorial nomination: Tom Corbett. While every Democrat running for Guv is taking shots at Corbett, the Governor and the PAGOP have only fired back at Schwartz. In this web video, for example. They’re doing it because they think Schwartz – a SEPA social liberal with a voting record in the thousands – gives them a better general election matchup. But Schwartz doesn’t mind. The attention makes her look like the de facto nominee, a big advantage perception-wise.
Ed Pawlowski & other online prank victims – A tip to candidates and campaign pros: buying your domain name is now more important than buying yard signs. The Allentown mayor faced a bit of embarrassment this week when the Morning Call revealed that www.pawlowskiforgovernor.com is a website that advertises a Japanese specialty cream that reduces the appearance of cellulite. Pawlowski handled it well, joking in a Facebook status, “Why am I running so hard…because I have the best legs in the race! Sometimes you just have to laugh.”
Charlie Dent – This is an Up two weeks in a row for Dent, but anytime that a congressman (not in leadership) earns an A1 feature story of the New York Times and it wasn’t for committing a crime, he or she is having an awesome week. That honor went to Congressman Dent this week as he was applauded for his work in standing as a lone moderate amidst the GOP in shutdown debate. And he’s gotten all the attention without having to meaningfully cross his party. Win-win!
Rob McCord – State Treasurer Rob McCord has spent years building relationships with local party leaders across Pa. It paid off Thursday. 20 county party chairmen and women endorsed McCord for Governor. See the list of party officials here. Although it’s unlikely that any governor candidate will get the official PA Democratic Party endorsement, which requires a ⅔ vote of the committee members, local county parties can endorse on their own.
Literally all of Congress – In a new poll from NBC and the Wall Street Journal found yesterday that when asked if they had the opportunity to fire every member of Congress, including their own representative, 60 percent of Americans said they would. Only 35 percent said that they wouldn’t. This might have something to do with the shutdown, or something.
Tweet(s) of the week: There’s Something About Mary Wilson. The WITF reporter found her calling this week when the meme #AddAWordRuinAMovie came into existence.

Jeff Romoff of UPMC shares his lobbyist with his regulator: PENNSYLVANIA INKS NEW FEDERAL HELP: The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania has brought on an outside firm for work on federal health care issues. The Keystone state has hired Buchanan Ingersoll & Rooney to work on Affordable Care Act implementation, Medicaid waiver and block grant issues, Medicaid expansion issues and other healthcare related topics. Michael Strazzella and Timothy Costa are listed on the account. Pennsylvania had Birch, Horton, Bittner & Cherot and L.G. Strategies on lobbying contracts in 2013 but terminated both in the second quarter. So let’s connect all the dots: COS Gromis-Baker worked at Buchanan Ingersoll. Her husband Scott worked there and was UPMC’s lobbyist. Now, Scott works for UPMC, as head of governmental relations. One of Buchanan Ingersol’s lead partners is Tom Buchanan, husband of Mary Beth Buchanan. Both Mary Beth Buchanan and Tom Corbett received strategic political advice from John Brabender. Does the Corbett Adminstration and UPMC sharing the same Federal lobbyist mean that UPMC’s interests and the interests of Taxpayers of PA are perfectly alligned?
