We didn’t plan to make this an all pairs week yet that’s what happened. See who made this week’s list!
Marty Flynn & Ryan Bizzarro. How could we not give an up arrow to these two State Reps. considering what they went through this week. As you’ve no doubt heard by now, Flynn and Bizzarro were accosted by two armed men seeking to rob them. Rep. Flynn, however, used his own firearm against the assailants causing a shootout. Luckily no one was hurt and all four minors involved in the robbery were caught.
Ron Castille & Seamus McCaffery. The two PA Supreme Court Justices have never really liked each other much and this week that feud spilled right out into the open. After Chief Justice pledged to punish those in the judiciary who sent inappropriate emails, it was revealed that Justice McCaffery was among those sending the messages. Eventually, Castille was able to get the Attorney General to share the emails. Meanwhile, McCaffery unloaded on his colleague, claiming the Chief Justice is out to get him before Castille’s term expires at the end of the year. We’re guessing this episode won’t improve relations in the State’s highest court.
Kathleen Kane & Frank Fina. Speaking of feuds spilling out into the open, we also had the saga of Kane and Fina this week. According to a report from the Inquirer, it all began when Kane criticized the work Fina and others did on the Sandusky scandal. Then, Kane shut down an investigation of Philadelphia legislators, a revelation that somehow made it into the papers. Finally, when Kane found evidence that Fina was among those sending and receiving pornographic emails, Fina obtained a court order prohibiting the Attorney General from revealing that information. Nevertheless, the news still got out. At this point it’s difficult to tell which feud is more bitter, more damaging to the commonwealth and (admit it) more fun to watch.
Tom Wolf & Tom Corbett. The Democratic nominee scored quite the coup when First Lady Michelle Obama came to campaign for him. He also surprised the state with the revelation that President Barack Obama would also stump for him. The President’s approval rating is not exactly stellar right now and only time will tell what effect his involvement will have in the race. Meanwhile, Governor Corbett gets to tie his opponent to the President. Yet Corbett is also dealing with his own difficulties, as the Washington Post named his campaign one of the “most ridiculous” of the year. This was quite the uneven week for both gubernatorial candidates.
Mike Fitzpatrick & Ryan Costello. The two SEPA Republicans received good financial news when the first details from their financial reports came in, as both candidates hold a money edge over their Democratic rivals. Furthermore, Fitzpatrick was aggressive in his debate with Democratic nominee Kevin Strouse and avoided any pitfalls. Finally, Costello saw Sabato’s Crystal Ball change their rating of the PA-6 race from “Likely Republican” to “Safe Republican”. Right now it is looking like a long shot that any PA congressional seats will switch parties come November 4th.
The tweet of the week goes to Philadelphia Magazine’s Joel Mathis for finding the humor in the kerfuffle among the PA Supreme Court Justices.

Mike – don’t throw your knee out with all that jerking; Flynn has been on the record for ages as being in favor of the right to carry. And regardless of what the LaPierre conspiracy-nut propaganda might suggest, it’s possible to be in favor of the right to carry and vote for reasonable restrictions like prohibiting felons and those with mental health issues from carrying or requiring that people who carry actually prove that they have training and know how to use their guns. That all-or-nothing nonsense is counterproductive and suggestive of an irrational zealotry that isn’t applied to the rest of the Constitution.
Sheri, not all those involved in the porn email scandal are elected officials. Those appointed or employed CAN be fired and should be. Those elected should self-apply the rules of most employers and resign. Their election, while it may put them beyond firing, does not put them beyond common decency and appropriateness as defined by most employers.
As much as we like to compare how things are done in the private sector to how things are done in the public sector, the government is not a business. As much as we’d like to fire these people, we cannot fire duly elected officials.
I’d love to see Flynn or Bizzarro now go back to that esteemed chamber in which they supposedly do the peoples business and vote for gun control. Because guess what, those thugs who mugged them don’t take kindly to the notion of following the law.
Kelly Jean I couldn’t have said it better.
I remember I sent my brother an inappropriate joke at his work email by mistake. He sent back that this was his work email and not to send personal emails to his work email. I often wonder why others did not do the same.
PAINDY1 is correct to stress the critical nature of this Outbreak. As a Pulitzer Prize nominee for his groundbreaking work on the Tomalis infection of our education system, his voice is one to be heeded. The Pfizer lobbyist in charge of public health in the commonwealth has a rigorous background in obtaining government contracts, tax breaks and preferential treatment for business which are immune to Ebola. If there is an outbreak in Philadelphia, as I understand it, he wants to firebomb the town with something called a fuel air bomb, the most powerful nonnuclear weapon in our arsenal. The way it works is it explodes, sucks in all available oxygen to the core, vaporizes everything within a mile of the core, men, women, votes and one airborne virus. Destruction complete. Case closed. And it better happen before November.
Seriously, enough with the down arrows for those castigating those who exchanged pornographic emails on public employment time or public employment computers! I have worked in the private sector for over a quarter of a century now and in that world, which seems to be the one that holds people accountable for their actions, employees are immediately fired for inappropriate emails, especially those including pronography or pornographic references. They are also disciplined or fired for inappropriate sexist, racist, etc., comments or images in the work place. Why should those working in the public sector be allowed to live under a less strict standard? They work for us. If anything, the standards should be higher. Every single one of them should be fired and removed from their job immediately, escorted out, personal effects boxed and sent to them. This is ridiculous.
TOM CORBETT NEEDS TO CEASE HIS CAMPAIGN UNTIL HE NAMES COMPETENT PA EBOLA CZAR! HIS BAD HIRES HAVE PUT PA AT RISK! GOVERNOR PUT PUBLIC WELFARE OVER YOUR CAMPAIGN! http://www.post-gazette.com/opinion/editorials/2013/04/13/Wolf-s-clothing-Corbett-could-have-done-better-for-public-health.html
