Well-known Pittsburgh-area conservative Glen Meakem on Thursday endorsed Allegheny County Keith Rothfus, giving the underdog Republican’s congressional campaign another boost as it gains momentum against opponent Mary Beth Buchanan.

“Keith Rothfus has the clarity of vision and commitment to principle that we need in Washington,” Meakem said in a statement. “The same laws of economics that shaped the Reagan Revolution and led to two decades of economic growth remain in force today. Keith understands that, and he will be an effective advocate for common sense and fiscal responsibility in Washington.

“There is no doubt in my mind that Keith is not only the strongest possible Republican candidate for the general election but the one best able to represent the people of western Pennsylvania in Congress,” he added.

Buchanan, a former U.S. attorney from western Pennsylvania, had been considered the favorite in the 4th District Republican primary. But her campaign has struggled out of the gate, mishandling radio interviews with local conservative hosts and not building the fundraising advantage many expected over Rothfus.

Both candidates are seeking the right to take on Democratic incumbent Jason Altmire in the fall.
