Legislative Elections Update:

HD-5: Second-term Berks County Recorder of Deeds Fred Sheeler announced his candidacy for the Democratic nomination for the recently relocated 5th House District.

“Many politicians forget that the taxpayers are essentially like paying customers who deserve good customer service. They run for office and promise to cut government spending and serve their ‘customers,’ but very few deliver on those promises. I have shown the people of Berks that I can deliver, having cut government spending and improved the level of service to the citizens of Berks,” Sheeler said.

Local businessman and Republican Joe Rudderow will seek his party’s nomination for the seat.

The 5th House District now includes all or parts of the following Berks County municipalities: the townships of Alsace, Bern, Bethel, Centre, Exeter, Jefferson, Maidencreek, Marion, Ontelaunee, Penn, Ruscombmanor, Tulpehocken, Upper Bern and Upper Tulpehocken; and the boroughs of Bernville, Centerport, Fleetwood, Leesport, Strausstown and Womelsdorf.

HD-94: Majority Whip Stan Saylor (R-York will face a primary challenge again in 2014. Next week, Kelly Henshaw will announce his candidacy for the 94th House District. Henshaw is a self-described conservative Republican who will fight for limited government, lower taxes and less government regulation.

Two years ago, in his first run for office, Kelly lost by barely 1,000 votes to Saylor.

“There’s a clear cause and effect here that is as neat and predictable as a law of physics: as government expands, liberty contracts.’ My opponent has spent 20 long years expanding government. I intend to help turn the tide back towards liberty for all,” Henshaw said.
