1/16 Ups & Downs

Power struggles, leadership changes, women and ladies. See who made this week’s list!

Down ArrowPhilly Democrats. A special election has became a source of conflict for Democrats in the City of Brotherly Love. The 170th State House seat that was vacated by Brendan Boyle has caused a power struggle between the new Congressman and the soon-to-be Lt. Governor, over who the Democrats should nominate. Boyle’s forces favor Seth Kaplan while Stack’s orbit want John Del Ricci to be the nominee. Kaplan is even threatening to run as an independent if Del Ricci is chosen. The Philly Democrats could ultimately split the vote and toss the seat to GOP nominee Martina White.

Up Arrow1Anthony Williams. State Senator Anthony Williams currently finds himself among a crowded field of Democrats in the race for Philly mayor. One major development, though, has altered the electoral math and made the mountain (at least seemingly) easier to climb. City Council President Darrell Clarke officially announced that he would not run this week. Not only does this eliminate a competitor for Williams, but it eliminates the only other potential serious black opponent he might’ve faced. That doesn’t mean every black voter will pick Williams, but in a city that is 44% black, it can’t hurt either.

Up Arrow1Scott Wagner. The times they are a-changin. Just a few months ago it seemed like Scott Wagner was SRCC’s Public Enemy No. 1. He accused Republicans of scheming to keep him out of the State Senate while the SRCC itself painted Wagner as a heartless fiend trying to scam a widow. Yet this week Wagner was named the Chair of the SRCC for the 2015-16 cycle. This turn of events might be the clearest sign yet that this is not Dominic Pileggi’s caucus anymore.

Down ArrowTom Caltagirone. Caltagirone, the Democratic State Representative from Reading, voted against Frank Dermody for party leader. After Dermody’s victory, he lost his position as ranking member of the Judiciary Committee. The vote “may have had something to do” with his demotion to leading the Urban Affairs Committee, Caltagirone admitted to Kevin Zwick of Capitolwire. We’re going to go ahead and step out on a limb and say he’s right about that.

Down ArrowDaryl Metcalfe. State Rep. Metcalfe wants everyone to know there’s a difference between a “woman” and a “lady”, and that Attorney General Kathleen Kane is a “woman”. Metcalfe made these remarks to KYW’s Chris Stigall on his radio show after the host complained that the AG was painting all her critics as “angry men out to hurt” her. Metcalfe has a long history with Kane, including threats to impeach her going back to last year. We’d ask Metcalfe what the difference between a “woman” and a “lady” is but he would probably only get himself in more trouble.

The tweet of the week goes to Brandon McGinley for the best response to Metcalfe’s comments.
