12/14 Morning Buzz: Redistricting Roundup

Good morning politicos, and welcome to the Buzz. At long last we have a new congressional map to look at, and it’s a work of art. Specifically, a Jackson Pollock painting.

Below is PoliticsPA’s special coverage of the redistricting plan, from soup to nuts. We’ve also created a special section of the Buzz to highlight redistricting stories from around the state and nation.

Pa’s New Congressional Maps: Here is the new Congressional map and the changes it will make pending approval by the majority Republican Pa. House, Pa. Senate and Governor Tom Corbett.

Altmire, Critz Gear Up for Primary Fight: Jason Altmire and Mark Critz will face off in a widely anticipated primary battle. PoliticsPA got reactions from them, as well as prospective GOP candidates Jim Christiana and Keith Rothfus.

Barletta Challenger Stays in: Bill Vinsko was one of Democrats’ top recruits for 2012, but in the new congressional map he doesn’t even live in Rep. Lou Barletta’s district. He vowed to stay in the race despite the redistricting setback.

Redistricting: What Comes Next: We have a draft of the new congressional districts. Here are the legislative and legal steps between now and it becoming the new, official map – including why it’s unlikely to be blocked in court.

Dems Decry GOP Gerrymandering: The current iteration of Pa-12, the one carved for Rep. Jack Murtha in 2001, is routinely cited as one of the most egregious examples of partisan gerrymandering in the nation. Republicans have outdone themselves with Rep. Pat Meehan’s new 7th district.

Other News:

Grading the #PaSociety Debate: Seven of the nine Republicans vying to face off against Bob Casey met in New York City this weekend, and here’s how they did.

Stollsteimer Won’t Challenge Meehan: Before the maps came out this week, Delaware County Democrat Jack Stollsteimer decided he won’t challenge freshman Rep. Pat Meehan in 2012. Instead, he has his eyes on Auditor General.

Obama Numbers Up; Casey Looking Good: Two polls send mixed signals about President Obama’s re-election hopes in Pennsylvania, and one is good news for Senator Casey.
