Petition signatures were due this week, and the totals dominate the Ups & Downs list, but some other good news for Democrats in Philly earns an Up Arrow. See who all made this week’s list.
Corbett-Cawley. The Republican’s gubernatorial ticket dispelled rumblings that there was no grassroots support behind the incumbent by filing 50,000 combined signatures. Plus, they unveiled a leadership team for the reelection bid, announced a new coalition of “Energy Families” and no polls came out that showed Corbett in trouble. All in all, a good week for the Gov.
Brenda Alton. The adviser to the City of Harrisburg arrived on Tuesday to file her petitions to get on the ballot for Lieutenant Governor. The only problem? Her staffer with the petitions didn’t show up in time. According to Alton, the staffer arrived shortly before the deadline and she was prevented from filing. As it stands now, she will not be on the ballot but she plans to appeal.
Jon Geeting & Ryan O’Donnell. This dynamic, progressive duo launched Primary Colors this week, a rating system for incumbents that shows how well they match up with their Congressional District. They were hailed for their algorithm and fancy mapping by Daily Kos and The Washington Post.
LeAnna Washington. The Senator from Montgomery County was indicted with one count of theft of services, a felony of the third degree that carries a maximum term of seven years imprisonment and a maximum fine of $15,000. She also is charged under the Public Official and Employee Ethics Act with one count of violation of the conflict of interest statute, a felony that carries a maximum term of five years imprisonment and a maximum fine of $10,000.
HD-174 Democrats. Incumbent Reps. Ed Neilson and John Sabatina of Philadelphia were set to square off in the Democratic primary to keep their seats, which were merged in redistricting. Now, they will avoid that battle as Neilson was nominated by the Democrats for the open seat on Philadelphia City Council.
Jay Paterno. Son of famed football coach Joe Paterno announced a few weeks ago that he would seek the Democratic nomination for Lieutenant Governor, but his petition filing this past week was not on par with what one would expect for a candidate with arguably the best name recognition in the state. According to the petitions available on the Department of State’s website, he filed just under 1,200 signatures with some counties that hovered around the 100 signature threshold. If these numbers are right, it makes him ripe for a challenge.
Marjorie Margolies. The former Congresswoman’s campaign to regain her seat got a major boost this week as former President Bill Clinton confirmed that he would come to PA-13 to fundraiser for her. Margolies’ son is married to Chelsea Clinton, and Margolies lost her seat after a controversial vote on Clinton’s budget. Interestingly, Clinton went 2 for 2 in competitive primaries in 2012: Critz over Altmire and Kane over Murphy.
Tweet of the week goes to one of our favorite fellow reporters, Melissa Daniels for achieving the impossible – making Act 47 interesting in 140 characters or fewer.
More than once, I’ve had Act 47 described to me using a mixed metaphor of Hotel California lyrics. Cities don’t lose designation often.

It may be good for MM that Bill Clinton is coming to Philly, but it also seems he has to rescue her financially after she mismanaged her campaign funds for the past several months.
Frank, it’s always been blatantly obvious that this blog is biased towards some of the candidates for governor and lg over the others, that’s why every time brad Koplinski walks down the street or ties his shoelace it’s a story on here. I don’t even dislike Koplinski but the Harrisburg cronyism makes me want to upchuck.
no up arrow for schwartz for 22000 signatures.hmm.
Dear COS GROMIS-BAKER: What donation do I have to give to the Campaign or the RGA to get a private viewing with Pope Francis and get to see WORLD CLASS Jeff Romoff practice his Italian on the Pontiff? Heyl: Corbett can lure Pope Francis with tales of Philly’s charisma | TribLIVE

The Tom Corbett/Acting Governor Brabender Re-Election so motivates me to write a big check. Their theme should be LET POLITICAL NECROPHILIA LIVE ON!
Let’s think about Corbett concession night: 1. Charley Zogby should be the MC! 2. The Nutts Baby Brian and Big Daddy Roger can open with tales of Nutt family public service! 3. The Prince of darkness, John Brabender, can deliver the concession speech and thank donors! 4. A live feed video will be shown of the Corbetts boarding World Class UPMc’s Jeff Romoff’s jet to their South Carolina retirement home! 5. PAGOP chair will close the evening and the Corbett campaign in a stirring rendition of Dixie while madly waving a REBEL flag!!!
