4/17 Ups & Downs

Personal business, spilled soda and brotherly love. See who made this week’s list!

Up Arrow1Ed Pawlowski. The Allentown Mayor sent up a trial balloon last week on a possible Senate run. We decided to run a reader poll that pitted Pawlowski against Sestak and the Mayor won 66% of the vote. Then, on Thursday we got the news that Pawlowski will throw his hat into the ring today. Sure, this campaign could be as successful as his Gubernatorial effort but no matter the result, this was a week full of hope for Ed Pawlowski.

Down ArrowBill Shuster. Nobody wants their personal life in the news. That goes triple for politicians, especially when you find yourself and your new girlfriend on the Politico homepage. That’s exactly the situation, though, that Congressman Bill Shuster finds himself in now. Why? Well, he Chairs the House Transportation Committee and she an Airlines for America lobbyist. We’re just guessing but this probably isn’t the easiest way to let extended friends and family know what you’ve been up to.

Up Arrow1Dougherty Brothers. Siblings have to look out for one another. Sometimes that involves financial assistance, specifically campaign finance help. Kevin Dougherty led all judicial candidates when it came to fundraising in the first quarter of 2015 with $707,391. Of that total, $302,000 or about 43%, came from the IBEW. Of course, the powerful Business Manager of Philly’s Local IBEW 98 just happens to be John Dougherty (aka Kevin’s big brother). The Dougherty brothers also were involved in PA-8 candidate Steve Santarsiero’s Q1 success as well.

Up Arrow1Pat Toomey. It was an especially eventful week for PA’s junior Senator. First, he published an op-ed on a proposed deal with Iran and shortly afterward the Congress and President have appeared to come to some sort of initial agreement. Then, it was revealed that the incumbent raised $2.1 million during the first fundraising quarter of 2015 and currently has $7.3 million cash on hand for next year. Finally, the impending arrival of Mayor Pawlowski into the race creates a Democratic contest that could harm the hopes of those seeking to oust the Senator. April surely hasn’t been the cruelest month for Pat Toomey (we’re sorry).

Down ArrowKevin Boyle. State Representative Kevin Boyle unexpectedly found himself on the receiving end of a cup of soda this week. The tosser of said soft drink? Tonya Stack, the wife of Lt. Governor Mike Stack and the Second Lady of Pennsylvania. Now, you are justifiably asking yourself how this happened? Well, to understand you have to know the history between the Boyles and the Stacks and the effect that feud had on a special election the Democrats gave away last month. Overall, you get the feeling this is just the latest chapter in a long and entertaining story.

The tweet of the week goes to Philly.com’s Emily Babay for her realization that she and Hillary Clinton have more in common than she would’ve thought.

  1. Kevin Boyle should have paid for a ticket (in the first place—like everyone else); and then after the incident not have contacted the media (or in the alternative not commenting, to the media). Get smart, Kevin and take it like a man (rather than cry about it!)

  2. Thumbs down to politicspa for not covering the fact that pa7 has a Democratic challenger

  3. The person who throws the soda gets the “thumbs-down.” The news article implies that Kevin Boyle did nothing to retaliate, and in fact was almost-but-not-quite gracious about it.

  4. Double thumbs down to Kevin Boyle for crying over spilt soda, whining to the press ( with a pr scripted boo ho ho silly nonsense of “I’m a victim”).
Aside from freeloading at a charity event, how can you even think to get into unpleasantness with the spouse of another politician in public.
The more I think of it the more it grates on me that he did not just get up and walk away.

  5. Maybe Shuster should get a thumbs up, but the disgraced and embarrassed people of his district should get a thumbs down. Especially if we’re dumb enough to reelect him.

  6. Shuster should be a thumbs up. You know how hard it is to date when you are single and over 50? Plus the article said that there was nothing ethically or legally wrong with it.

  7. If this happened in Pittsburgh, what would have been thrown would have been called “pop” Just want to make sure my fellow yunzers know what happened in Philly.

  8. Don’t you think the Stacks should get the down arrow instead of the person who had the soda thrown on them?
