5/2 Morning Buzz

Even after our upgrade, election week sent us over our monthly capacity. Oops!

Good morning politicos, here’s the Buzz. The write-ins are still being tallied, but check out which incumbents made both sides of the ballot and who fell short.

NRCC Launches Ad Against Critz (Watch Video): Mark Critz’s 12th district seat is Republicans’ top pickup opportunity in Pennsylvania, and among their top targets nationally. They’re striking while the iron is hot, and Critz is still depleted of resources after a hard-fought primary with Jason Altmire.

Knowles Seeks to Rally GOP Against CAP: The Citizens Alliance for Pennsylvania probably spent between $30,000 and $50,000 to defeat Rep. Jerry Knowles. It’s not new; CAP has been targeting moderate Republicans and incumbents signed on to the state pension plan for years. Now, Knowles is hoping to rally his colleague against the group.

Does DePasquale Boost the Dem Ticket? It’s tough for any Auditor General candidate to bump his party’s ticket up or down; since those candidates run the same year as the presidential election and typically have far less money on hand than the top of the ballot. But Eugene DePasquale might be able to boost the ticket out west.

Romney to PA Tuesday; Obama Camp Attacks: Mitt Romney has a few friends in Pennsylvania. He’ll be attending a high-dollar fundraiser today in Bryn Mawr. Meanwhile, the Obama campaign and Dems have a counter-event of their own. Update: the Dems’ Bryn Mawr event was cancelled.

Legislative Election Updates

SD-33: After write-ins, Bruce Neylon, 59, will compete against state Sen. Richard Alloway, (R-Franklin) to represent the 33rd state Senate district — which includes all of Adams and Franklin counties, and parts of York County.

HD-54: After an unsuccessful Dem write-in bid, Rep. Eli Evankovich (R-Westmoreland) will face a general election challenge from Patrick Leyland, 35, a registered Democrat who served as a Kiski Area school director from 1998 to 2009 and made an unsuccessful bid for Allegheny Township supervisor in 2009.

HD-79: The Altoona Mirror reports on the general election matchup between Joe McGinnis, the Republican who defeated Rep. Rick Geist, and Richard Flarend, a Democrat and Flarend, a Penn State Altoona physics and energy associate professor who got 320 write-in votes.

HD-90: Rep. Todd Rock (R-Franklin) fell 50 votes short of securing a write-in nomination as a Democrat, but all’s well for him. His prospective actual Democrat opponent Shelton Schwartz got even fewer write-ins.

HD-116: Gort42 looks at the race between freshman Rep. Tarah Toohil (R-Luzerne) and Democratic farmer Ransom Young, who has been a member of the Butler Township Board of Supervisors for 28 years. He also looks at Toohil’s finance report (she has $6,400 on hand, and some interesting expenses including dry cleaning).

HD-117: A few thousand dollars worth of mailers paid off for Rep. Karen Boback (R-Luzerne). She overcame Democrat Mark “Duke” Barrett in write-in votes and will appear on both sides of the ballot.

HD-120: Gort42 takes a look at the race between Rep. Phyllis Mundy (D-Luzerne) and Republican Aaron Kaufer, including fundraising numbers and recent election results in the district.

HD-193: Mike Strausbaugh, 38, of Hamilton Township, Adams County, will compete against incumbent state Rep. Will Tallman (R-Adams) to represent the 193rd state House district — which includes Hanover and Penn Township in York County and Adams County.
