Wolf’s budget decsion has its ups and downs, online voter registration outpaces traditional paper registrations, PASSHE schools stay open, and handing out flyers at polls makes a difference. See who made this week’s Ups & Downs!
Tom Wolf. Governor Tom Wolf announced he would allow the budget to become law without his signature, keeping his name off the unbalanced budget, allowing him to run against the legislature next year, but the move marks the third year the Wolf has not signed the budget, opening him up to attacks from Republicans for his leadership.
Pennsylvania’s Credit Rating. Standard & Poor’s Global Ratings put Pennsylvania on its watchlist for a possible credit downgrade if the state’s budget does not put the state on solid financial footing. With legislators sent home, it does not look good for Pennsylvania’s budget or credit rating.
Online Voter Registration. It was announced this week that voter registrations through online voter registration outpaced traditional paper registrations by nearly 100,000 through the end of 2016.
John Maher. State Representative John Maher was charged with DUI this week after he drove after a legislative session day with a blood alcohol level of 0.16.
PASSHE Schools. The much anticipated report on how to fix the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education’s budget issues was released this week. Against what many thought, the report did not suggest closing or merging any of the schools.
Poll Flyers. A study released this week showed that having volunteers handing out literature with recommended candidates has a positive effect on the candidates listed. While the study did not show it could sway an election, it did suggest best practices that can be expanded upon for further study.
Bonus Up/Down: Every week, PoliticsPA will be including a bonus up or down, that is exclusive to Playbook email subscribers. To sign up to see the bonus arrow click here.
The tweet of the week goes to Patriot News reporter Jan Murphy for seeing some people’s true calling in life:
Senate poised to act on naming Anthony Moscato to the Board of Probation and Parole but the LCB might be a better fit

Yes, I can see the GOP attack now: Gov Wolf is not a good leader because he let our GOP legislature budget pass and become law. He should have shown leadership and blocked us in this venal budget. So vote for him, so he can have another chance to veto our stupidity.
