8/2 Ups & Downs

The same-sex marriage fight in Montco, the Guv’s race, and more! See who made the list of all ‘Ups’!

Up ArrowBill Peduto. There was one possible scenario where the the Democratic nominee for Pittsburgh mayor would do something other than cruise to election in November. It would have taken City Council President Darlene Harris to mount a serious independent bid. But the deadline for such a move passed on Thursday, with nary a peep from Harris. Peduto is it.

Up ArrowDaryl Metcalfe. The outspoken conservative state Rep. continues to build his (fire)brand at the expense of House GOP leadership and Gov. Tom Corbett. He got a nice profile this week in Capitolwire about the former, and penned an attention-getting release titled “Schooling Governor Corbett” about the latter.

Up ArrowKatie McGinty. The top two talked-about Democrats running for Governor are Congresswoman Allyson Schwartz and state Treasurer Rob McCord. But McGinty has been generating buzz in Dem circles, as aptly described in this Patriot News profile of her campaign. Plus she got some of her Clintonite enviro contacts to endorse her.

Up ArrowHarrisburg. It’s not common that Pennsylvania’s beleaguered capital city gets an up based on its financial dealings. OK, it’s never happened. But recently the city got a little bit out of the hole by auctioning off its multi-million dollar collection of eclectic wild west artifacts. The revenue surpassed predictions and was a rare spot of good news for the city.

Up ArrowValues voters. For a little while there, it looked like Gov. Corbett and the Pa. GOP were planning to cut them loose on the issue of same-sex marriage. Their challenge to AG Kathleen Kane was all about process and neutral on the issue. But this week the Guv’s admin sought out a same-sex marriage fight when it went out of its way to file a suit against Montgomery County to force an official to stop issuing marriage licenses to same-sex couples.

Tweet of the week: Ben Waxman.

He’s the press secretary for state Sen. Vincent Hughes (D-Phila), and he had a good one about the state’s decision to sue Montgomery County over same-sex marriage.

Facebook post of the week: Bruce Castor.

You’d think the explosive issue of same-sex marriage, combined with a legal confrontation with Gov. Tom Corbett, would be enough to get a rise out of Josh Shapiro. But as noted by Castor, Shapiro’s GOP colleague on the Montgomery County Commission, the Democrat has quite a poker face in this video.

Dear COS Gromis-Baker (the Corbett Camelot’s Joan of Arc): This is my favorite article of the week by PAGOP Chair Rob Gleason. Mr. Gleason contends the Corbett administration is scandal free. I suggest he borrow one of your administration’s White Stallions, ride up to State College and ask Mrs. Sue Paterno, if she agrees? Maybe Mr. Gleason can conduct a search for the remains of Ray Gricar, while he is visiting Happy Valley, which would be wonderful political theater, that even Mr. Brabender might appreciate! Also he should visit PSU’s chapter of the Young African American Republicans too.

  3. I couldn’t agree more with the misuse of the term “Values Voter”. I consider myself a Values Voter, it’s just that the values I value are equality and social justice.

  4. Anybody else thinking that McGinty would be the dream candidate to run against Pat Meehan?

  5. “Value Voters” ??

Stopping people who love each other from getting married isn’t a “value”.

Being gay isn’t a sin, so there is no moral basis to deny them rights.

If the “value” voters are really so concerned, they should be fighting to prevent divorcees from getting remarried. Let’s call those “re-unions” instead of marriage.
