Two former Party Chairs are awarded for civility, Pennsylvania’s creditor look to make more money, Mango goes on TV first, Bernstine gets into hot water, and Philly Republicans fall behind independent and third party voters. See who made this week’s Ups & Downs!
Alan Novak & T.J. Rooney. Former state Republican chairman Alan Novak and former state Democratic chairman T.J. Rooney were both awarded the inaugural Allegheny College Prize for Civility in Public Life in Pennsylvania. In today’s political environment, rewarding civility by party leaders deserves recognition.
Pa’s Creditors. The latest downgrade in Pennsylvania’s credit rating means Pennsylvania’s creditors stand to make tens of millions of dollars more a year on Pennsylvania’s loans.
Philly Republicans. It was reported this week that for the first time, independents and third party voters outnumber Republicans in Philadelphia. The news will not help the city party who is going into the PA GOP’s fall meeting with controversy surrounding the Chair and vice-Chair as well.
Paul Mango. Gubernatorial candidate Paul Mango was the first Republican candidate to put up television commercials this week. Running the ads, even in just the western markets, will help the relatively unknown candidate build name recognition and frame his story early.
Aaron Bernstine. Over the weekend, state Rep. Aaron Bernstine got himself into hot water for his tweet saying he would not stop for protesters blocking the road. The tweet may come back if he faces a challenger next year or runs for higher office in the future.
Tim Murphy. It was revealed that the Navy is looking into Rep. Tim Murphy’s extra marital affair to see if he violated the Uniform Code of Military Justice. The extra attention will likely not help Murphy move past the affair as 2018 approaches.

The tweet of the week goes to Pa. Dems Press Secretary Brandon Cwalina for his all too accurate tweet to sum up the week.

UCMJ proceedings can strip the officer of rank and not be a good thing in an upcoming political race. two s stupid moves on mr. christian right wings values: having an affair, then trying to get a cut order to keep it secret….
Maybe Tim Murphy can get a Trump pardon for marital infidelity, as Trump is a well-known philanderer and the Navy is under his command. Is obstruction of military justice any worse than obstruction of civil justice?
Rep. Bernstine is a sterling example of the Pro-Life movement.
