A Fond Farewell

Nick FieldOne thousand three hundred and fifty-six days ago, I wrote my first story for PoliticsPA.

After just over a year as a Contributing Writer, as well as two and a half years as Managing Editor, it’s time for me to move on.

I’ll be passing the baton to Paul Engelkemier, who will take over on Monday although you may still see me around for a little during the transition.

I’d like to take this opportunity to send out some thank yous. First to the owners of this site for entrusting it to me.

To the contributors I worked with during my first year: Doug Dolling, Carl Feldman, Kevin Horne, Jordan Krom, Nick Laughlin, Bryan Magee, Vincent Smith and Jake Williams.

A special shout-out must go to all the Contributing Writers who worked for me as Managing Editor: Jason Addy, Tom Beck, Mari Boyle, Chris Calabrese, Matt Cassidy, Rachael Anne Cook, Hugh Daly, Eddie deSciora, Rachael Franchini, James Ben Foster, Ryan Fucci, Kate Hardiman, Lizzy Hardison, Jill Harkins, Nate Kanuch, Christina Martin, Chuck Moton, Alyssa Mursch, Jake Pavlecic, Jeffrey Robinowitz, Kerry Rugenstein, Abby Smith, Sarah Sowden, Jules Struck, Lora Strum and Jack Tomzcuk.

Your contributions to this site were immeasurable. Take note of those names, you’ve already likely seen them elsewhere, and I’m confident you’ll see them many more times in the years to come.

To my predecessor Brittany Foster, who became Brittany Crampsie in the intervening years, thank you for making this possible.

To my dear friend and mentor Keegan Gibson, who became a father in the intervening years, it’s difficult to sum up my thanks in just a sentence. The best I can do is say I couldn’t have done it without you.

Finally to the readers, because of you I got to see Presidents and meet Governors. I was able to report from the Democratic National Convention and interview members of Congress.

Beyond all that, I had the opportunity to write and edit fantastic, illuminating work that explored the very nature of our commonwealth. Along the way we broke traffic records and made it through a Presidential election, a Gubernatorial race and countless Congressional and Legislative contests.

I hope you found PoliticsPA informative, thought-provoking and worth your time. Thank you.

  1. I intended to compose you a little bit of observation to finally say thanks a lot the moment again for all the superb principles you have discussed here. It has been so extremely open-handed with people like you to offer without restraint all that a number of us could possibly have distributed as an e book to help with making some profit for themselves, precisely given that you might have tried it in case you wanted. The solutions also served as a easy way to be aware that other individuals have the same dream similar to my personal own to learn many more with reference to this issue. I believe there are a lot more fun opportunities up front for those who view your blog.

  2. All I’m saying is that he has an uphill climb to convince me he isn’t a hack. Definitely not starting from square 1, same for asterisk I mean potus*. I’m not going to just assume he will effectively leave his years of spinning news in favor of the gop at the door.

  3. You people who think that because the new guy worked for the Republicans he is bound to be a political hack are political idiots. When I wrote editorial commentaries for a living, if my publisher said to slant this one left, I did; slant right, I did. Of course, I didn’t write viewpoints with which I completely disagreed; others wrote those. But there is always ideological wiggle room. If the site’s owners tell the new guy to keep it politically neutral, he will. A paycheck is a powerful motivator. Good luck to the new guy and, as always, we have with us some political idiots.

  4. @ d2:

AGAIN, perhaps you should allow Paul Engelkemier to function before disqualifying his editorship; the same attitude from lefties is now being directed inappropriately @ The Donald.

  5. Sklaroff

Paul’s resume is clearly that of a political hack/mouthpiece. A proper pick would be a neutral person with journalism background.

  7. Great job Nick. My only critique would be to consider only allowing anonymous pseudonyms.

Thanks for the clarification. This blurb from the PA GOP should be a disqualifier to run this site:

    “Paul Engelkemier, Deputy Communications Director

Paul Engelkemier serves as the Deputy Communications Director for the Republican Party of Pennsylvania. Paul previously served as Press Assistant during the 2014 election cycle, and interned with the PA GOP during the 2012 election. Prior to working with the PA GOP, he worked in secondary education. Paul graduated from Shippensburg University with a degree in political science.”

  9. Sad to see what has been a fairly neutral blog become the mouthpiece for the PA GOP. I’ll give the kid a chance but just a cursory google search shows where his allegiance lies.

  10. Congratulations Paul Engelkemier! So great to hear that you were promoted to Communications director before leaving the Republican Party.

  11. Good Job Nick. I am sure your successor will carry on the tradition of making this site a great place to get the news we can not get in other places.

  12. Paul Engelkemier is leaving his post as Republican Party of PA communications director to take this post. Just an FYI to readers.
