AFL-CIO Endorses Supreme, Superior and Commonwealth Court Candidates

PA Supreme CourtThe Pennsylvania AFL-CIO, the state’s largest labor organization, doled out its judicial endorsements Monday.

Supreme Court candidates Judge Kevin Dougherty and Judge David Wecht enjoyed a second endorsement, nabbing the organization’s endorsement for the top state judicial position, along with Judge Christine Donohue.

Both Dougherty, a Philadelphia judge and brother to IBEW Business Manager John Dougherty, and Wecht, a Superior Court justice, also scored the endorsement of the state’s Democratic Party during its meeting last month.

Perhaps the Supreme Court candidate who benefitted the most, though, was Donohue. The Superior Court justice finished third of the Supreme Court candidates on the Democratic Party’s ballot in February, but fell short of the two-thirds number needed for the endorsement. The AFL-CIO endorsement could boost her campaign toward the level of Dougherty’s and Wecht’s.

Also earning his second endorsement was Commonwealth Court candidate Todd Eagan. Eagan picked up the AFL-CIO endorsement Monday, adding to his already-obtained Democratic Party endorsement.

The labor organization also endorsed Allegheny Court of Common Pleas Judge Robert Colville for the state’s Superior Court. Neither Colville nor any other Superior Court candidate was endorsed by the Democratic Party in February.

“In our judgment these candidates are exceptionally qualified in applying equal justice and dignity for workers under the laws protecting the working families of Pennsylvania,” said Pennsylvania AFL-CIO President Rick Bloomingdale in a statement. Bloomingdale pledged that the organization “will work on their behalf, sharing their record of support and respect for the rights of working men and women.”

The organization’s Secretary-Treasurer Frank Snyder shared Bloomingdale’s sentiment, announcing that the Pennsylvania AFL-CIO will start immediately to work “with our unions and or members to help elect our endorsed candidates.”

“We have a historic opportunity to elect well-qualified candidates to the most important courts in the Commonwealth,” Snyder stated. “Their success will enable us to end the political gerrymandering that has disenfranchised millions of Pennsylvanians. The importance of electing these judges cannot be underscored enough.”

  1. A judge who has served for several years hearing juvenile cases in Philly by choice and has done a great job for kids (Kevin Dougherty) should not be called a union thug!

Judge Dougherty and Judge Wecht, were support4ed by Democratic State Committee because they are considered to be quality candidates.

Todd Eagen is also a quality candidate and the others who didn’t get endorsed were very well accepted and the votes didn’t reach 2/3 of the members.

Thus, we have AFL-CIO votes as another sign that the candidates this year are fine candidates and we can be proud to select a great ticket for the Primary and beyond.

  2. Dougherty has the state party endorsement, union endorsement and is from Philly. Three reasons I won’t be voting for him in the primary

  3. The judicial officers of the Pennsylvania Superior Court are “judges”, not “justices”. And yes, there is a difference. Union support is big news for Donohue, but her campaign manager is the west’s very own Marty Marks. No big surprise there!!
