Allegheny Controller Primary Heats Up

By Keegan Gibson, Managing Editor

Former Pittsburgh Councilwoman Valerie McDonald Roberts has picked up the endorsement of County Exec Dan Onorato, her campaign announced today. She also won the endorsement of businesswoman and former PA-4 congressional candidate Georgia Berner.

“It is exciting and noteworthy to receive the support of two individuals that I respect and like,” McDonald Roberts said. Both of them have had remarkable career accomplishments within Pennsylvania, across a wide spectrum of voters, and the support of them illustrates that a broad range of people have identified with my campaign.”

PoliticsPA is working to confirm the endorsement from the Onorato camp.

McDonald Roberts has the support of several liberal issue and womens advocacy groups, including the 14th Ward Independent Democratic Club, PA NOW, the Gertrude Stein Political Club, and African American Women for Political Change.

Meanwhile, State Rep. Chelsa Wagner continues to build labor support for her campaign. She recently picked up the backing of the Pittsburgh Federation of Teachers and the United Mine Workers.

It’s part of a near sweep of labor endorsements for Wagner, which includes the major building trades in Allegheny County, the Labor Council, SEIU, IBEW 5, and more.

That’s on top of her endorsement by the Allegheny County Democratic Committee.

Likewise, former Duquesne Mayor and casino businessman George Matta is making waves – airwaves.

His campaign just began a 16-day radio buy on KDKA-AM radio, the region’s premier talk radio station and likely listening for primary voters.

“When voters look at the backgrounds of the candidates, they will see I have the mix of experience that’s ideally suited to being the controller,” said Matta.  “I understand the needs of our communities; I’ve managed budgets in both the private and public sector; and I know county government.”

That’s according to Johnna Pro, a veteran writer for the Post-Gazette and former spokeswoman for State Rep. Dwight Evans. She’s been brought on to coordinate Matta’s campaign.

  1. Hello, simply wanted that you understand We’ve included your internet site to my personal Yahoo book marks because of your great blog site design. Nevertheless significantly, I do think your site features one of many easiest style I’ve discovered. It truly helps make looking at your blog post much easier.

  2. Roberts seems like the most experienced candidate. Can we even trust Matta anymore?? I don’t know Wagner at all since she is out of my district, but I think this positions is pretty analytical and needs not just a politician but someone who can crunch the numbers and give us an accurate assessment. Not sure if Wagner or Matta are up to the job, but I know and respect Roberts very well from when my kids (who are now grown) lived in her school district.

  3. People all over Allegheny County still like and know Onorato really well. I think his endorsement is great. We should have elected him governor instead of the idiot we have now. Allegheny county should be ashamed of itself for not getting their hometown boy into office.

btw, i love the ridiculous posting by the obvious pro-Flaherty person. Isn’t the article about the controller race, dummy?

  4. Dan Onorato’s positives remain high with Allegheny County Democrats despite the fact that they all didn’t see him as Governor. His endorsement of Valerie is very, very helpful.

  5. Onorato’s endorsement is a nail in the coffin! He got his shorts handed to him in November. Problem with him was that as Controller, he was eyeing the Exec. As Exec, he was eyeing Gov, but he did nothing. He failed to resolve assessments in 8 years! Please! He pandered to who he owed from past elections. Now, VMR is excellent-agreed, but she should publicly return Dan’s endorsement. Would be apropro. HEADS UP! Fritzgerald will begin his negative campaign this week! He has nowhere else to go! He isn’t as smart as Flaherty, has no real solutions to our region’s problems, and is now copying what the Flaherty campaign has been saying. He is literally paraphrasing some of Flaherty’s quotes. We’ve followed the trail and have listened to debates. Fritzy is even declaring that Flaherty doesn’t want to debate! How many times does he need to be embarassed? Heard he was jacked by a surrogate at United Cerebral Palsy. Flaherty shouldn’t even waste his time anymore. Fritzy is going all negative from here.
