Allegheny County DA: Zappala Fends Off Challenge from Middleman

He’ll serve a sixth term.

Longtime Democratic Allegheny County District Attorney Stephen Zappala fended off a challenge from his left in Independent candidate, public defender, Lisa Middleman.

According to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, Middleman conceded the race Tuesday night around 10:15.

Zappala held around a 12 point lead with approximately 230,000 votes cast.

“During my administration we have changed just about everything with our criminal justice system. We changed how we handle charging, how we handle bail,” Zappala said, according to the Post-Gazette. “We made those changes here, and they were repeated across Pennsylvania.”

Zappala had the backing of members in the Allegheny County Democratic Committee and former GOP Gov. Tom Corbett, while Middleman has received endorsements from Democratic state Reps. Summer Lee, Ed Gainey, and Sara Innamorato, and SEIU Healthcare.

  1. Funny how no one mentions that Middleman defended the most notorious cop killer in the history of Pittsburgh. I’ll take Zappala over scum lawyers like her.

    1. You should want criminals to have good defense attorneys so that prosecutors make a good case and they don’t eventually get off on technicalities or process issues. Look at what happened to the Bundy Standoff idiots. If prosecutors had done their jobs, it would have been an open and shut case and those freeloading wannabe rebels who threatened to murder law enforcement would have spent the rest of their lives in prison.

  2. Hooray for the D.A.! A big win for our family. I’m really happy for my son Chuckie, junior. He gets 4 more years on the gravy train as the office solicitor and law partner of Stevie, Jr. What a party at Chupka’s! That’s poker machine king Duffy Conley’s family’s joint. Thanks, Duff! And how about my little cousin, junior, junior, campaign manager. He will get a big tip from the leftovers. We also salute the Pgh media for never exposing our mafia roots and pushing the big lie ” the mob is dead.” Not true. We just all became lawyers.

          1. Forever, junior junior. Here’s a news flash. Since I now have nothing to do and all day to do it, I write books now…about your family. I took good notes in law school so expect the worst. My last book was about your great uncle, mob boss John Bazzano. There will be more…right now I am researching a murder in Munhall, waiting to see why your daddy won’t investigate it. Hmmm.

  3. Thankfully, DA won. We dont need another “progressive” let-them-all-out-of-jail district attorney. A DA is sworn to uphold the law and be and advocate for the law-abiding citizens. Steve Zappala has always done that. Sadly, Philadelphia is in state of chaos with its current top prosecutor.
Congrats DA Steve and keep protecting us!
