Allegheny Exec Open Thread

Check back all day for updates on the race for Allegheny County Executive (and other Allegheny Co. races). We’ll touching base with those campaigns all day and bring you results after the polls close.

9:07pm: Early Returns calls the race for Fitzgerald.

We’re going to go ahead and call the county executive race for Democrat Rich Fitzgerald.

With more than a third of the vote in Fitzgerald is leading 66-33, and we don’t see how Republican D. Raja can catch up.

5:28pm: Fitzgerald CM Mike Mikus.

Republican poll from Upper St. Clair show some districts nearing expected turnout of 25%.

Fort Couch Middle School (Upper St. Clair Ward 2 District 3)

  • Turnout as of 5PM – 13.23%

Turnout appears to be higher in Democratic leaning areas and lower in Republican leaning areas. Here’s a polling location in Highland Park.

Fulton School (Ward 11 District 7)

  • Turnout as of 5PM – 22.13%

3:26pm: Raja CM James Genovese.

“We have a full headquarters with tons of volunteers committed to winning this race. They are knocking on doors and making phone calls. Talking with their friends and neighbors about why Raja is the best candidate in this race.”

3:20pm: A GOP source in the North Hills – Republicans’ strongest base in Allegheny County – says turnout there is light and enthusiasm lacking. It includes Ross, McCandless, Shaler and Westview.

3:04: Raja GC Mark Harris.

“I haven’t seen east end numbers, I expect Mt. Lebanon, McCandless, USC all to crest into the high 30%’s in turnout putting them above average for the county. We’re knocking doors and feeling good but at this point its up to the voters to make their pick.”

2:37pm: Chelsa Wagner CM JJ Abbott.

“Turnout is low but proportional among Ds/Rs except East End turnout is very high and lower than usual in some of the North burbs which bodes incredibly well for Fitz and the Dems.”

1:38pm: Fitzgerald CM Mike Mikus.

“Turnout is low but luckily for us it is proportional – Republicans and Democrats are voting at roughly the same level.  The big news for us is that turnout is highest in the East End of Pittsburgh which is Rich’s council district. We’ll run up big numbers there.

“We have approximately 180 people door knocking and 30-40 on the phones right now.  Things feel good. We’re going to be working it until the polls close.”

10:30am: Tribune Review: about 1/3rd of voters expected at polls today. Tribune Review: updates from SWPA polling places.

9:45am: Update from Fitzgerald Campaign Manager Mike Mikus:

“Things are looking good for us. Anecdotally, reports we are receiving are very encouraging even though turnout is a bit light.  Poll workers in “swing” polling locations saying the response from those showing up is very positive.”
