Dave McCormick, who ran unsuccessfully two years ago for the GOP Senate nomination, completed his comeback with a victory over three-term incumbent Bob Casey Jr.
The Associated Press called the race at 4:09 p.m., ending a nearly 40-year dynasty of Caseys serving the people of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.
“Congratulations to Dave McCormick on his incredible victory,” said Steve Daines, chair of the NRSC. “Dave built a best-in-class campaign operation, ended a political dynasty, and will now use his considerable skills to bring bold new leadership to the United States Senate on behalf of all Pennsylvanians. I look forward to working with Dave to secure the border and bring down prices for the American people.”
At 4:35 p.m., McCormick’s lead was still within the threshold of 0.5% that would mandate an automatic recount of the results. His advantage is 31,930 votes or 0.47%.
McCormick lost in 2022 to Mehmet Oz in the GOP primary that was decided by 950 votes. Oz would go onto lose the general election to Democrat John Fetterman.
“As the Pennsylvania Secretary of State said this afternoon, there are tens of thousands of ballots across the Commonwealth still to count, which includes provisional ballots, military and overseas ballots, and mail ballots,” said Casey spokesperson Maddy McDaniel. “This race is within half a point and cannot be called while the votes of thousands of Pennsylvanians are still being counted. We will make sure every Pennsylvanian’s voice is heard.”
