Pennsylvania Society Notes: Musings on Platts, Barletta, English

NEW YORK — Rumors, musings and random notes gathered from a the annual gathering of Pennsylvania’s political “elite.”

U.S. Rep. Todd Platts‘ decision to apply for the chief job in the Government Accountability Office has led to a flurry of speculation of who might replace him — even though most 19th District Republicans don’t expect Platts to be hired for the job. Among those PoliticsPA hears might be interested is state Rep. Scott Perry, who is currently serving in the armed services, and York County Commissioner Chris Reilly. State GOP Central Caucus Chairman Dick Stewart, also rumored to be interested in the job, we’re told is no longer interested.

Speaking of Cumberland County politics, Republican fundraising guru Greg Rothman, we’re told, might be eying a run for one of the two GOP commissioners seat up for re-election in 2011.

Former 3rd District Congressman Phil English
, a supporter of Republican gubernatorial candidate Jim Gerlach, told PoliticsPA his former congressional colleague faces an “uphill battle” in the GOP primary because he has taken a “reform stance.” English, who’s helping host an event for Gerlach this weekend, said he has run a very aggressive campaign thus far.

Vince Galko will return to manage Lou Barletta’s congressional campaign in the 11th District, the Hazleton mayor told PoliticsPA.

The two Democratic Senate candidates, Joe Sestak and Arlen Specter, are both absent from Friday night’s festivities because of business in Washington. But word is both will make appearances in New York tomorrow.

The party might be in New York, but the minds of many of those in attendance remain in Harrisburg, where  legislation to legalize table games remains unfinished after the House suddenly adjourned Thursday morning. If people here had to pick one word to describe the situation in the House right now, it would be “chaos.”
