Analysis: Pennsylvania ghost job trial may set tone for cases

HARRISBURG — The first trial from a legislative corruption investigation pursued by Attorney General Tom Corbett is scheduled to begin Tuesday in Dauphin County Court, in a case accusing a former legislator of holding a ghost job while a state House candidate.

Defendant Sean Ramaley, a former Democratic state representative from Economy, and Corbett, a Republican candidate for governor in 2010, have a lot riding on the outcome of the trial. Ramaley is the first of 22 people to go to court on charges resulting from a statewide grand jury’s recommendations.

Ramaley faces six felonies for allegedly taking a “no-work” state job in the Beaver Falls office of former Democratic Rep. Mike Veon. Ramaley, charged with theft, conspiracy and conflict of interest, is accused of using his taxpayer-funded position to campaign for office in 2004.

His lawyer, Philip Ignelzi of Pittsburgh, declined to comment. Ramaley has insisted he is innocent.
