Baer: Williams’ guv candidacy raises questions

PHILLY STATE Sen. Tony Williams’ upstart (some would say quixotic) run for governor has a backdrop of political buzz too much fun to ignore.

Since most politicians’ actions are hard to accept at face value, there are theories about why Williams is really in the race.

First is the notion that he was coaxed in by the Bob Brady/Ed Rendell wing of the Democratic Party just before its state committee was poised to endorse for governor on Feb. 6.

The theory is state Auditor General Jack Wagner, of Pittsburgh, was close to garnering the two-thirds vote needed to grab party backing. This would have been a blow

to Allegheny County Executive Dan Onorato, and an embarrassment to Rendell, who supports Onorato to succeed him.

But once Williams entered the fray with the support of Brady and the city delegation, no one had enough votes to win the endorsement.
