Bishops search for Senate sponsor (will it be Casey?)

Roman Catholic bishops have yet to find a senator willing to sponsor their amendment for a tougher ban on use of taxpayer money for abortion coverage in the Senate health care reform bill.

“We’re talking with any number of senators,” Richard Doerflinger, who oversees the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops’ pro-life advocacy, said in a conference call with reporters. “We don’t have a Senate name on the amendment yet.”

Among the senators under intense pressure is Bob Casey (D-Pa.), a Catholic and high-profile opponent of abortion rights.

Over the weekend, Casey said “more work” needs to be done to improve the Senate abortion coverage wording.

But Casey is also considering broadening any amendment he might offer to create stronger support systems for women coping with unexpected pregnancies, which could appeal to more senators.
