To understand an unusual species … it helps to study its habits.
Consider, for instance, the odd creature known as ”Politicus Pennsylvanius.” Every December, this flightless and ungainly mammal makes the unfathomable decision to eschew warmer climes, and instead makes a brief, 170-mile migration from its home in Pennsylvania to the hotels, restaurants and party rooms of midtown Manhattan for an annual celebration known as the Pennsylvania Society.
The riotous, generally alcohol-fueled, excursion lasts about 48 hours. It began on Friday and culminated in a gala dinner Saturday night at the Waldorf Astoria hotel.
And it remains little changed from the early days — the gala is marking its 110th year — when well-connected Pennsylvanians living in New York would invite friends from home for a weekend of revelry and political networking.
