Dauphin GOP won’t endorse in race for Tim Holden’s seat

Dauphin County’s GOP will remain neutral in this spring’s Republican primary.

The candidates – state Sen. David Argall, R-29, military veteran Frank Ryan, businessman Josh First and former minister Allen Griffith – each urged the Dauphin County Republican party to not endorse anyone in the contest to pick an opponent for U.S. Rep. Tim Holden, D-17, in the Nov. 2 General Election.

“Four quality candidates have come forward … each of the candidates vowed to exercise the fiscal discipline which each of us must apply but which is lacking in Washington. We look forward to uniting behind the victor after May 18 to oust Tim Holden,” the Dauphin County Republican Party said in a press release Tuesday.

The 17th Congressional district includes Dauphin, Lebanon, Schuylkill and parts of Perry and Berks counties. Party leaders in Perry County will likely forego an endorsement, while Schuylkill, Lebanon and Berks may endorse, but a decision will be made by each county’s GOP executive committee in the coming weeks.

While Argall urged Dauphin County GOP leaders to remain neutral, he said he is “still evaluating” whether to make a similar request to Schuylkill, Lebanon and Berks party leaders.

“I will leave it up to the individual counties,” Argall said.

Ryan and First, meanwhile, lauded Dauphin’s decision.

“The whole (primary election) process needs to give voters the opportunity to pick a candidate,” Ryan said Tuesday. “If I had asked for the endorsement (in Dauphin County), I would have done very well.”

Last week, First said any county GOP committee choosing not to endorse Argall is a victory for the other candidates.

“Overcoming inside machinations and the weight of an incumbent was hard work,” First said in a Tuesday press release.

  1. Argall didn’t speak up for a non-endorsement decision in Dauphin County until it became clear he would lose an endorsement vote.

His “principles” stop at the Dauphin County line until he sees similar outcomes about to happen in other counties.

    Typical hackery.
