Democrats angling to make Doherty lt. gov.?

Discussions have taken place about Scranton Mayor Chris Doherty running for lieutenant governor instead of governor, and pairing his campaign with Allegheny County Executive Dan Onorato’s campaign for governor, three knowledgeable sources tell The Times-Tribune.

The discussions have involved representatives of both campaigns as well as a representative of Gov. Ed Rendell, one source said. The governor has ties to both Mr. Doherty and Mr. Onorato and has said they have “the best experience for governor” because they have been chief executives.

The sources, who spoke on the condition they not be identified, would not characterize how far along the discussions are, except to make it clear no deal is imminent.

A spokesman for the governor denied he or anyone acting on his behalf is involved in the talks.

“I haven’t had any discussions on it. I’ve heard the rumors,” Mr. Doherty said. Asked if he ruled out a lieutenant governor bid, he said, “Nice try, I’m running for governor.”
