Rick Santorum said today he is encouraged by the reaction he has received in the year since he began traveling to Iowa, and continues to seriously consider a Republican bid for president in 2012.

“I’ve been encouraged by the reaction that I’m getting from folks and the comments I’m getting,” Santorum said in a Des Moines Register interview at the Iowa State Fair. “Obviously the situation in this country continues to be in my opinion one that is going to require strong leadership to face up to President Obama in 2012.”

Santorum was wrapping up a three-day Iowa swing with perhaps the most telling sign of the former Pennsylvania senator’s future. Iowa is expected to host the leadoff nominating caucuses early 2012.
