Saying there is too much at stake for families in his state House district, Rep. Bill DeWeese, D-Greene, issued a news release today stating his intention to seek re-election to the seat he has held for over three decades.
DeWeese said his tenure and leadership in the state House have given him an understanding of the legislative process and relationships that benefit his constituents. “I have been able to secure substantial financial help for our counties, municipalities and school districts, as well as our local hospital and Waynesburg University,” DeWeese said.
DeWeese, meanwhile, is facing charges of theft, conflict of interest and conspiracy stemming from accusations by Attorney General Tom Corbett that DeWeese was running full-time campaign operations out of his Harrisburg and Greene County offices at taxpayers’ expense.
Because of those charges, he stepped down from his leadership post in December. DeWeese has been a fixture in Democratic leadership since 1988 and the House speaker in 1993-94.
