In the wake of Senate Democratic Leader Robert J. Mellow’s sudden plan to retire, Scranton Mayor Chris Doherty confirmed Thursday that he is considering a run for state Senate instead of governor. “I got into public service to make my community better,” Mr. Doherty said. “When someone of the stature of Senator Mellow retires, you have to ask what would be the best role for Northeast Pennsylvania.”
