HARRISBURG — Alleged problems with the jury that convicted former House Democratic Whip Mike Veon and two former aides are “very strong issues” the defendants could use on appeal, a legal expert said.
But, cautioned John Burkoff, a professor at the University of Pittsburgh School of Law, trial issues deemed fertile for appeal by no means guarantee success.
A jury last week convicted Veon of 14 counts, including 13 felonies, in the longest trial in recent Dauphin County history. Two aides were convicted of felonies; a third was acquitted. The charges involve widespread use of taxpayers’ dollars to pay for political campaigns.
If Veon wins an appeal, he gets another trial.
