State Lawmakers have agreed on a budget that will likely be finalized tonight, Gov. Ed Rendell announced at a press conferece today.
The final spend comes to just over $28 billion, a number Rendell said he was confident would pass both houses in a timely fashion.
“It’s a good budget, it’s a frugal budget, it’s a budget that will serve us this year and next year,” he said.
But the agreement was not reached without making significant sacrifices, many of which Rendell described as “painful.”
“There’s no way to do this without inflicting pain,” he said. “There’s no good way to cut $1 billion from the budget … But under the circumstances, this is the right thing to do. The fiscal realities of what we are facing require this kind of budget, and everyone needs to understand that.”
