The budget deal struck between three legislative caucuses and Governor Ed Rendell appears in danger of falling apart after the state’s chief executive Thursday acknowledged the agreement might be “unraveling” because of rank-and-file opposition and Senate Republicans signaled any changes to in the House could bring the impasse back to “square one.”
Although House Democratic leaders told him they remain committed the agreement’s framework, the governor told reporters during an afternoon press conference that some House Democrats are pushing for new ways to raise revenue in place of some of the deal’s existing proposals, such as taxes on small games of chance and cultural events.
