Democratic Chester County Commissioner Kathi Cozzone has endorsed congressional candidate Manan Trivedi, his campaign said Thursday.

Her support comes just days before the county’s Democratic committee will convene to consider an endorsement in the 6th Congressional District primary. Trivedi, a former Naval officer, is running against former Philadelphia Inquirer editorial writer Doug Pike for the party’s nomination.

“I am honored to have Kathi’s endorsement because of the unique understanding and set of skills she brings to her life as a public servant,” Trivedi said in a statement. “We need new ideas and a fresh approach to change our community for the better. When I am in Congress, I am confident that Kathi and I will have an effective working relationship to make those changes happen.”

The Trivedi campaign in recent weeks has emphasized support from local party members while Pike has touted his nearly $1 million cash-on-hand advantage over his opponent. The primary between the two men will likely be one of the state’s most competitive.

UPDATE: The Pike campaign released a letter Friday from former Chester County Democratic Party Chairman Wayne Burton that touted the former journalist’s ability to defeat incumbent Republican Jim Geralch through his financial and grassroots support.

The letter was sent to every member of the Chester County committee, according to the Pike campaign. Burton, a former county chairman who  lives in the 16th Congressional District, had not publicly endorsed Pike until Friday.

“We should endorse Doug Pike this Saturday as the best candidate to beat Jim Gerlach – and get a strong, principled, and progressive Congressman in Washington,” Burton wrote.
