Tom Corbett holds a decisive advantage over Sam Rohrer in the Republican primary while the Democratic gubernatorial field is still mostly a blank slate to voters, according to a Franklin & Marshall College poll released Wednesday.
Corbett leads Rohrer 26 percent to 4 percent among registered Republicans, the poll reported, but two-thirds of them are still undecided about the race.
Others polls have shown the attorney general, a heavy favorite to win the May 18 primary, receiving upwards of 40 percent support among party voters.
The Democrats gubernatorial race is a dead heat, according to the poll. Three candidates — Joe Hoeffel, Dan Onorato, and Jack Wagner — all receive six percent of the vote among registered Democrats while Philadelphia state Senator Anthony Williams receives just one percent support. Scranton Mayor Chris Doherty, who ended his campaign while the poll was being conducted, received four percent support.
Nearly 72 percent of respondents said they didn‘t know who they would vote for yet.
The lack of a clear front-runner in the polls would seem to favor the candidate with the most money, in this case Onorato. The Allegheny County chief executive has more than triple the amount of cash on hand as any of his opponents and is perceived by most as the race’s front-runner.
But Auditor General Wanger might also benefit from running statewide three times previous if undecided voters decide to go with a familiar name at the ballot box. Wagner also has the support of many local party members across the state.
The poll was taken from Feb. 15 to Feb. 21 and has a margin of error of 3 points.
