The nearly $800,000 raised by GOP congressional candidate Pat Meehan thus far, the most of any congressional challenger thus far, doesn’t concern his likely Democratic opponent in the fall, state Rep. Bryan Lentz.
The lawmaker, who has already raised more than $500,000 himself, said his stronger resume’ will triumph Meehan’s superior resources in the 7th Congressional District.
“I don’t have to raise more or as much (as Meehan),” he told PoliticsPA during an interview Tuesday. “I just have to raise enough to get my message out.”
Lentz, a former Army Ranger and prosecutor in Philadelphia, contrasted his record with Meehan, a former Delaware County district attorney and U.S. attorney. The state lawmaker said Meehan has been a political operative and hand-picked choice of GOP officials his entire career.
“I think people will find I’m the better candidate to send to Washington,” he said.
The southeast congressional district favored Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama by 13 points in 2008 over Republican foe John McCain, but a shifting national climate that appears to favor the GOP has likely evened the electoral playing field.
Lentz faces Democrats Gail Conner and Teresa Touey in the district’s Democratic primary, in which he is the heavy favorite. His matchup with Meehan, each vying to replace outgoing U.S. Rep. Joe Sestak (D), might be one of the most closely watched congressional races in the country.
