A Muhlenberg College/Morning Call tracking poll unveiled Monday showed Democratic gubernatorial candidate Dan Onorato earning 41 percent support in the four-man race, 33 percentage points more than his nearest opponent.
The poll shows Montgomery County Commissioner Joe Hoeffel at 6 percent, Auditor General Jack Wagner at 5 percent, and state Senator Anthony Williams at 8 percent, with 40 percent undecided. It surveyed 400 likely Democratic voters and has a margin of error of 5 percentage points.
It’s a dramatic shift from most early polling done on the race, which showed the Allegheny County executive ahead of his rivals but usually garnering less than 20 percent of the vote. But the poll is consistent with others taken of the race since Onorato, who had a warchest in excess of $6 million to start Arpil, began aggressively airing TV ads statewide, which have shown the front-runner opening up a lead on his opponents.
Williams is the only other Democratic candidate to follow Onorato on air with an aggressive ad campaign, including unveiling Monday the contest’s first critical ad against Onorato.
