A new poll released Friday shows U.S. Senate candidate Joe Sestak with a 3-point lead over Republican rival Pat Toomey, 43 percent to 40 percent, with 17 percent of voters undecided.
The Research 2000/Daily Kos poll surveyed 600 likely voters from May 24 to May 26 and has a margin of error of 4 point.
The Democratic nominee has surged in the polls since his campaign began its ad blitz roughly a month before his primary against incumbent Arlen Specter. Interestingly though, the poll reported more voters, 22 percent, still don’t have an opinion of Sestak than they do for Toomey, 11 percent, despite the Republican nominee’s primary being considerably lower profile.
The most worrying statistic for the former Lehigh Valley congressman might be Sestak’s huge lead, according to the poll, in the all-important Philadelphia suburbs. It says Sestak, a congressman from Delaware County, holds a 51 percent to 29 percent edge in the voter-rich region, which always seen as the key to victory for any statewide candidate.
