Hoping to build upon a recent upswing in GOP momentum, 7th Congressional district candidate Pat Meehan will host a fundraiser in Philadelphia Dec. 2 with New Jersey Governor-elect Chris Christie, Vince Galko, Senior Advisor to the Meehan Campaign, told PoliticsPA.
Christie, who knocked off incumbent Gov. Jon Corzine (D) last week, is a partisan ally and personal friend of Meehan. The two became close while Christie was New Jersey’s US Attorney and Meehan was the US Attorney for Pennsylvania’s neighboring Eastern District.
“Both Governor-elect Christie and Pat Meehanhave made their careers as reformers, and I think people want to send both of them to office to hold government accountable,” Galko said.
Christie’s recent win in New Jersey, considered a reliably safe state for Democrats, was a landmark pickup for Republicans, and the GOP is already targeting current-Rep. Joe Sestak’s 7thDistrict seat. Sestak’s departure to run for Senate has led to a trio of Democrats fighting for the party’s nomination, including state Rep. and early front runner Bryan Lentz, environmental lawyer Gail Conner, and political consultant Teresa Touey. State Rep. Greg Vitali is also considering running for the seat.
“Governor-elect Christie’s victory was the first time voters had the chance to speak out since the implementation of these gigantic bailouts and massive government spending,” Galko said. “This whole idea that it’s a Republican thing Chris Christie kind of put to rest because so many Democrats and independents voted for him.”
“It’s no different in the 7th, because one party does not dominate. Ask anyone on either side of the aisle, this will be one of the top 5 races in the country, and a lot of attention is going to be focused on it.”
