Former Governor Mark Schweiker on Thursday endorsed Bucks County Commissioner Jim Cawley for lieutenant governor, giving the southeast politician a major boost in his bid to emerge from a crowded Republican field.
Schweiker has already endorsed Republican gubernatorial candidate Tom Corbett. Cawley would be the attorney general’s best running mate, the former governor said.
“Jim Cawley has exactly what we need to deliver the leadership, integrity, common sense solutions, and strong fiscal stewardship to the citizens of Pennsylvania,” Schweiker said in a statement. “As a county commissioner, he has held the line on government spending—not increasing taxes a penny over the last four years.”
Political commentator Joe Watkins, Chester County Commissioner Carol Aichele and Cawley are considered the frontrunners for the position.

Cawley gets Schweiker and more than likely Bucks, Aichele will land Chesco. Montgomery County?? But the curious one is Philadelphia. Would make sense that they would back the hometown guy Watkins, yes? I mean, the West is breaking for Watkins big….Westmoreland County Chair a few days back and Lynn Swann yesterday….what gives?
Actually, Steve Johnson is probably the most electable candidate for LG, but he doesn’t have the backing of the “machine”.
