The mixed verdict delivered Monday night against former House leader Mike Veon doesn’t change Republican gubernatorial primary, the Sam Rohrer campaign said hours after the jury made its decision.
The campaign between Rohrer and Republican Tom Corbett is about which man is a true conservative on important policy issues facing the next governor, it said.
“The premise of Sam’s campaign is that there needed to be an authentic, conviction-driven conservative in this race,” said Rohrer senior strategist Jeff Coleman. “That’s what this campaign is about. Nothing has changed for us. The pre-primary trial schedule has been a really fascinating side show, but it doesn‘t alter the policy debate — that’s how we’re going to pick a governor.”
Corbett holds a heavy advantage against Rohrer in nearly all polling, although the state lawmaker’s campaign likes to point out that many Republican voters remain undecided.
Although many Republicans have viewed it as essential to giving the gubernatorial hopeful credibility as a reformer in a year when that could be essential to getting elected, Corbett has rarely mentioned the “Bonusgate” investigation on the campaign trail. The attorney general has opted instead of tout his fiscal conservative credentials while highlighting other plans to reform the Capitol.
