PoliticsPA: Saidel asks for recount

Democratic Lieutenant Governor candidate Jonathan Saidel, locked in a neck-and-neck battle with Scott Conklin even after 99 percent of the precincts have reported, asked on Wednesday for the Pennsylvania Department of State to conduct a recount of his race.

With 99.3 percent of the vote counted, Conklin leads Saidel by 4,644 votes, 35.4 percent to 34.9 percent. Sixty-five precincts have yet to report.

“As we understand it, it is the prerogative of the Pennsylvania Secretary Sate to proceed with a recount,” Saidel said in a statement. “State election law provides for a process that will guarantee every vote is counted and tallied correctly. We have every confidence Secretary Cortes will proceed in an appropriate manner and we will do all we can to bring about an expeditious and accurate conclusion to the primary election.”

A Department of State spokesman was unable to say on Tuesday whether the race was headed for a recount, according to the Centre Daily Times.
