Former Philadelphia City Controller Jonathan Saidel easily won the state Democratic Party’s endorsement Saturday, defeating former Commonwealth Court Judge Doris Ribner-Smith.

But his toughest opponent for the nomination might come from the gubernatorial campaign, where Scranton Mayor Chris Doherty increased speculation he might run for the job when he wasn‘t nominated to be considered for the party’s endorsement for governor.

Of the more than 300 party members present at the endorsement meeting, only two are needed to nominate a candidate for consideration.

Asked about Doherty‘s possible opposition, Saidel said: “I don’t care what he does. He can do what he wants.”

Doherty would likely face an uphill battle against Saidel. The Philadelphia attorney, in addition to being from the voter-rich city, has more than $700,000 on hand. Doherty has just $94,000.
