State Senator Andy Dinniman has endorsed Arlen Specter’s re-election bid, the U.S. senator’s campaign said Tuesday.
The backing of Dinniman, considered an influential Democrat in Chester County, is a boost to Specter as he vies with opponent Joe Sestak for support in the voter-rich southeast.
“It is my privilege to endorse Senator Specter,” Dinniman said in a statement. “His knowledge and experience make him best suited to continue representing the citizens of Chester and Montgomery counties, and of Pennsylvania.”
Dinniman added, “And having the Senator at the top of the Democratic ticket this fall puts us in the best position to win.”
Although Specter has the support of nearly every prominent Democrat in Pennsylvania and Washington, Dinniman’s endorsement was likely not a guarantee. The state senator last year endorsed congressional candidate Manan Trivedi over fellow Democrat Doug Pike. At the time, Pike had the support of nearly every Democratic official in the southeast, including the region’s congressional delegation, and Dinniman’s endorsement was seen a major boost to Trivedi’s campaign.
Sestak represents the 7th Congressional District.
