Democratic Senate candidate Joe Sestak on Thursday fired back at Republican U.S. Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) over the former presidential nominee’s opposition to the military’s “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy.

President Obama said during Wednesday night’s State of the Union address that he wants the policy ended this year, and McCain responded that repealing the policy would be a mistake.

That prompted Sestak to question his thinking.

“As the senior ranking military Veteran in Congress, I am compelled to respond to Sen. McCain’s opposition to President Obama’s commitment to allowing all American troops to serve their country openly and honestly,” Sestak said. “How can a policy that has dismissed more than 13,000 trained, able, and honorable American servicemembers — including upwards of 800 troops with “mission critical” skills, like Arab linguists — be viewed as successful?”

He added later, “The men and women who wear the cloth of this nation should be entitled to the rights they so heroically defend.”

Sestak is a former Navy admiral.

  1. I’m routing for you unfortunately I live out of state. (Former resident of Lehigh, Lackawanna, & Luzerne counties.)

  2. Sir,
I am in your corner all the way. I am disappointed with President Obama’s endorsement of Sen. Specter, especially in view of this man’s pre-Democrat position and his reputation of going with the political weather vane that appears to favor him most.
You will have my support, come the primaries, and I look forward to seeing you as our next U.S. Sanator for Pennsylvania.

  3. Arlen was okay as Republican but not as a Democrat. He admitted that he changed paryies because he would be defeated as a Republican-That does not a Democrat make.We already have the turn coat Lieberman, why do we need another one. Joe is a veteran and a Democrat and the man we need in Washington. Give ‘em hell Joe.
