PoliticsPA: Three polls show Sestak, Specter in dead heat

Less than a week from the May 18 primary, three polls released Wednesday morning confirm that Democratic challenger Joe Sestak is neck and neck with the longtime Sen. Arlen Specter.

The Muhlenberg/Morning Call tracking poll that has Pennsylvania political observers waking up early each morning shows the two men tied at 45, a change from Tuesday when Sestak was up 4 points. The poll has a margin of error of 5 points.

In a Franklin & Marshall College poll released Wednesday, Sestak leads the incumbent by 2 points among likely, 38 percent t o 36 percent, with nearly 25 percent of voters undecided. The poll surveyed 404 Democrats from May 3 through May 9 and has a margin of error of 7.9 points.

And a Quinnipiac University poll shows Specter leading 44 percent to 42 percent. From May 5 through May 10, the poll surveyed 945 likely Democratic voters with a margin of error of 3.2 points.

“Sen. Arlen Specter has a history of winning close elections and he’ll need that to continue because his once commanding lead is gone. His margin over Sestak is too close to call,” said Peter Brown, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute.
