PoliticsPA: Toomey’s new ad slams Sestak on unemployment rate (VIDEO)

Republican U.S. Senate nominee Pat Toomey’s campaign Tuesday unveiled a new ad that hits Democratic opponent Joe Sestak over the country’s nearly 10 percent unemployment rate.

The 30-second spot will be aired statewide on broadcast TV, according to Toomey’s campaign.

The ad is noteworthy because it doesn’t include any references to Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) or call Sestak a liberal, which until now have been the calling cards of Toomey’s criticism so far. Instead, it focuses on the country’s unemployment rate, government-funded bailouts and record deficits produced by the stimulus.

“Joe Sestak voted for all of it,” a narrator says.

The television spot then pivots to an image of Toomey touring a factory and touting his plan to end bailouts, reduce spending and lower taxes.

Focusing on the unemployment rate, rather than linking Sestak to Pelosi, could be an indication this ad is focused more on moderate voters than the Republican Party base.

Toomey’s campaign has now been on air continuously since July 6 while Sestak, who was left broke after defeating Arlen Specter in the primary, has yet to unveil any new ads.
