Everyone generally likes snow – but not 40” all at once. But perhaps the Obama Administration and the Congress should be thankful for the “Snow-pocalypse” that shut down Washington this past week. No one noticed that the Administration and Congress can’t figure out what to do next so they’re “frozen” (bad pun) in inactivity (wait, maybe that’s a good thing).

John Murtha was an undeniable force in Washington. He looked out for America, Pennsylvania and his District (not always in that order). Hugh Scott, Joe McDade, Bud Shuster, Bob Borski and now John Murtha … in a town where seniority is king, Pennsylvania continues its downward spiral. Godspeed Congressman Murtha.

Do we have to hear about the state budget again already? Next to the snow there’s nothing more we’re all sick of discussing. Well, here is it again, introduced by the Governor this week—his last. We had a break for a few months, and now it’s all starting again, with plenty of folks expressing their feelings. Here we go again.

Forty years ago, an adolescent Michael Jackson was topping the charts with his brothers, Richard Nixon wasn’t yet in trouble, and Bob Mellow was first elected to the PA State Senate. Wow, that’s a long time ago. Political careers that long always run the risk of going from illustrious to notorious, and he was no exception. His hometown paper called his legacy “mixed” and that sums it up. Chris Doherty might have another option for his own political career now, as rumblings say he is mulling running for the seat, even though he is currently in the Governor’s race as well. Ah, NEPA politics.

The Pennsylvania Tea Party Coalition had their event this past Tuesday night in the bastion of conservative politics … Philadelphia. While the movement is white hot now, does it have legs? No telling if it will remain a force or fizzle (it seems to us the movement’s fate hinges on the economy). Most of the Republicans running for office made an appearance with two interesting observations. How does Pat Toomey keep the Tea Party crowd and RINO-haters happy all while moving hard to the center to win moderates in the fall? Was Jim Gerlach otherwise booked on Tuesday or just the wisest of all?

Arlen Specter and Jack Wagner both made good showings at the Democratic State Committee meeting in snowy Lancaster last weekend. Specter received the endorsement of the committee (an important symbolic step for the former Republican) and gubernatorial candidate Jack Wagner recieved 153 of the 302 votes cast (but no endorsement was made in the race for governor). Though Dan Onorato is the assumed favorite for the Democrats, Wagner is “the little engine that could” in this race.
