Tom Corbett. On the one year anniversary of the federal stimulus program, the Attorney General and GOP gubernatorial candidate emailed supporters, blasting Democrats for “spending tax money does not get the job done,” and citing continued unemployment rates in Pennsylvania. Then, during budget hearings in Harrisburg this week, Corbett told the appropriations committee that he needed, um, more funding, for the AG office to support their operations.

When Pittsburgh Mayor Luke Ravenstahl could not be reached to sign a request to extend the declaration of a snow emergency, rumors began to swirl that the mayor was in New Orleans for Mardi Gras …Not true, says Ravenstahl, who then lashed out at the media in a press conference. “Do you want to know what kind of socks I have on, or what kind of underwear I wear, is that public record?” Come on Luke, it’s never a good idea to bring up underwear when you’re under fire.

A former gubernatorial candidate, rumored candidate for lieutenant governor, current Scranton Mayor, and recent candidate for state Senate - Chris Doherty has been, at times, difficult to keep up with. Now, though, the Electric City mayor is focusing his efforts on his campaign for the state Senate seat left vacant by the longtime Senate leader Bob Mellow. Doherty, who has become the face of Scranton’s revival and a popular guy in NEPA, struggled in fundraising efforts for his statewide campaign, but could make a serious impact in the state Senate, if elected. Plus, he avoids the messy Democratic gubernatorial primary, where at least three candidates appear likely to fight ’til the end, and a potential general election contest with favored GOP candidate Tom Corbett (see above).

In 1773, when British Parliament passed the Tea Act, colonists in Boston tossed British tea into Boston Harbor, a sign of the revolution to come. In that very same spirit, we applaud Sen. John Rafferty (R-Collegeville), who began a “Beer Revolution” (complete with a piper playing Yankee Doodle) in Harrisburg this week when he proposed new legislation to allow purchases of beer six-packs at supermarkets and convenience stores.

Mary Beth Buchanan, a former U.S. Attorney and new GOP challenger to Rep. Jason Altmire (PA-4), started off her campaign with a bang yesterday, when she called in to KDKA’s popular Marty Griffin show to defend her investigation of Cyril Wecht, the former Allegheny County coroner and local Democratic Party chair. Wecht had been on the show with Griffin earlier, and claimed that Buchanan’s two-year investigation against him had cost taxpayers upwards of $20 million. The conversation between Buchanan and Griffin quickly soured, and at one point, Buchanan said, “I am answering your question if you would shut up and let me talk.” FULL AUDIO HERE
