PoliticsPA’s Up & Down: 3/5 Edition

Sure enough, here comes Arlen! The longtime Pennsylvania Senator took the lead in the latest Quinnipiac poll over both primary challenger Joe Sestak and GOP candidate Pat Toomey. Now with President Obama headed to Philadelphia, Specter hit the airwaves on The Ed Show this week, touting health care reform legislation that is showing signs of life again.

On the flip side of the poll, Joe Sestak continues to struggle to keep up with Specter, and is now down 24 points according to the pollsters at Qpac.  With Specter’s camp incessantly trashing Sestak’s campaign payroll, Rep. Eric Massa (D-NY) resigned Wednesday surrounded by controversy just a day after endorsing Sestak’s Senate bid.

All of us, if the I-80 tolling isn’t approved. That much was clear at last night’s forum for Pennsylvania’s six gubernatorial candidates, none of which could provide specific plans to fill a potential $450 million hole in the state budget if the federal government rejects plans to toll the interstate.

We’ll admit it, Rep. Glenn Thompson isn’t often mentioned here at PoliticsPA, but that doesn’t mean we’re not keeping an eye on him.  This week, Thompson submitted a resolution to congratulate Penn State students for raising $7.8 million for children with cancer at their annual THON event.  The annual event has raised a staggering $68.9 million since its inception in 1973.

Mark Critz, a former Murtha staffer and candidate for the vacant 12th district seat, came under heavy fire late this week from his primary opponent, Barbara Hafer. At issue is Critz’s involvement with Parkins, Inc., a Johnstown-based company that received multiple tax violations during his tenure as the book keeper and manager.  How much this will hurt Critz remains to be seen, but tomorrow’s straw poll will provide a good indication of which Democrat will receive support from party leaders.

  1. Critz is the best Murtha legacy candidate. He is the electable candidate. Why aren’t we discussing important issues like who is the best candidate to maintain and create jobs in the district? For the past 11 years, Critz has worked tirelessly to help Jack Murtha create jobs in this district. His motivations are right. He will prevail tomorrow. Does Ms. Hafer forget that she is no longer a Republican? It was so disappointing to me to see her attack our late hero, Jack Murtha on the day he was being memorialized in DC.

  2. Does anyone that lives in Pennsylvania believe the Quinnipiac poll Specter vs. Toomey? It is obvious that Quinnipiac is in Connecticut and not PA. I haven’t found a Specter voter (in the general)yet and I used to be one.

  3. Legacy how… as in corruption. The republican salvo wont work. Bob Casey is a US Senator today because of Barbara Hafer putting the best interests of the dem party over selfish ambitions and endorsing him early. Its sad to see that Mark Critz and all his corrupt cronies could not do the same thing. What a crook.

  4. and b/t critz being electable? im not sure what planet you are on. maybe amongst the tax evasion electorate….
