The whole political world watched last night as Congress voted to pass the health care reform bill, undoubtedly the most important, controversial, and massive piece of legislation to date in the Obama administration. One Pennsylvanian’s ‘Nay’ vote, however, has gotten plenty of attention – Rep. Jason Altmire (D-4) announced on Friday that he would vote against the legislation, further entrenching him as the poster boy of conservative Democrats that opposed Obama’s marquee legislative initiative. Already facing a difficult GOP challenger in former U.S. Attorney Mary Beth Buchanan, Altmire can expect serious push back from local progressives, too. Ditto for Rep. Tim Holden (D-17), the only other Pa. Dem to vote against the bill.
Back in Pennsylvania, the drama continues, as political observers await the verdict in Mike Veon’s ‘Bonusgate’ trial. Getting at least one, high-profile guilty verdict would ease Attorney General Tom Corbett’s mind – a successful crackdown on Harrisburg corruption would look good for the GOP gubernatorial frontrunner.
